Reddit user noticed recently that the exact same black-and-white newspaper prop has turned up in dozens of commercials, movies, and TV shows — including such diverse programs as Married With Children , Modern Family , Everybody Hates Chris , and Desperate Housewives . His compilation of screenshots has been going around the Internet, but without an accompanying explanation for why this particular paper keeps getting recycled.
Brow Beat has learned that the prop comes from a small newspaper prop company called the Earl Hays Press in Sun Valley, Calif. Started in 1915, Earl Hays is one of the oldest newspaper prop companies, and the paper in question was first printed in the 1960s (note the top-hat ad on the lower left), then offered as a “period paper,” better suited for Mad Men (where it has not appeared) than Scrubs (where it has). The screenshots don’t actually reveal the same prop — just various printings of the same file. The front is blank and can be customized, but the inside and back page are always identical. In fact, in No Country for Old Men , when Tommy Lee Jones is reading a paper at a diner, the section in his hands is the same as the one sitting on the table, suggesting that the prop master bought two copies to make the paper look fuller, but made the mistake of leaving the stock spread facing up.
Production companies use prop newspapers instead of real ones because getting clearance from an actual publication is usually more work than it’s worth in potential fees and bureaucracy. (There are exceptions. When Tony Soprano picked up his paper each morning, it was always the Newark Star Ledger .) Rather than battle the legal department at the New York Times for that perfunctory breakfast shot, prop masters buy a stack of Earl Hays fake papers, which cost just $15 each. Sometimes if they have some left over they’ll recycle them for another job.
In case you’re curious about the headlines, here are a couple. Above the photo of the young woman with long, thick, dark hair: “She’s 3rd Brightest But Hard ‘Gal’ To See.” On the opposite page above what turns out to be a warehouse burning: “Compromised Housing Bill Sent to President for OK.”

I can understand why they use the same prop, but what I don’t understand is why they always stop reading the paper on that page, or why they always take long enough pause on that page for people to notice.

In this day and age, we’re very used to the “art” of photoshop, and almost all the pics we see on famous web pages, are shopped in some way. This has made us shout out “SHOPPED!!” any time we see a picture of something unusual, we just don’t believe anything weird, cool or wtf exsists. So now I’d like to show you some pictures people would say are call fake, but are real. And I cba to add sources, this is not Wikipedia, just google it if you don’t believe me.
—————————————

This looks like something a kid who just got photoshop might have thought was a funny thing to make, but it’s not. This was a prop for an Eddie Murphy movie, “Meet Dave”.
———————————

This is not from a lame disatser movie, this is a beach on Island of St. Maarten which is right next to the airport. The Airport has a very short runway, so the large planes have just barely enough room to land.
———————————————-

This could be a left over decoration from last year’s Halloween, or just something you’ve attatched to the trash can to keep hobos from going through it. But nope, this is a coconut crab. Coconut crabs are found in areas around the Indian Ocean and central areas of the Pacific Ocean, and they are freaking scary.
——————————————

If I found this on a random site on the web, I’d be like “That’s photoshopped for sure! No dogs look like that.” But then I’d be wrong. This is Wendy, she is a whippet and suffers from a disorder that causes muscular growth. Poor thing.
———————————————-

This could be another lame Hollywood movie screenshot, but this is just the Burj Al Arab skyscraper in Dubai.
———————————————-

My eyes! I’m getting dizzy just looking at this picture, who would make such a house? Noone, it turns out. This is a ragular building in Paris that’s covered with a weird tarp during a renovation.
———————————————

This must have been made to make fun of the regular Swiss Army Knife, right? Nope, it’s an actual Swiss Army Knife designed to help you do any task, but you really can’t since it’s too big and lumpy to use.
——————————————-

HE CAN FLY!!!!!!

Oh, never mind…
————————————-

This is a woman from England with a growth abnormality causing her legs to reach enormous size. Looks painful :o
——————————————-

Holy hell O.o Poor poodle.. This is taken from the “Super Groom competition” and apparently anything is alowed there.
——————————————-
These icebergs were observed off the coast of South Africa. It turns out those stripes are caused by sediment or even dead krill getting trapped in the ice in layers over time.
—————————————————–
This peniscopter belongs to a man who felt it was a good idea to “attack” Gary Kasparov during a press conference. Not sure what mr. Kasparov had done to deserve such a cruel punishment, but it must have been something horrible!
—————————————-
This is art.. Not someone practicing reflection effects in photoshop. Artist Florentjin Hofman made this 100-foot long rubber duck and this is why according to the artist, “The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relief mondial tensions as well as define them. The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!”
Makes sense.
—————————————————-
This looks like the ending to the movie “Evolution”, but it’s really mammatur clouds. Whatever that is O.o.
———————————–
Okay, the background might not be real, but this is one of the first pictures ever taken with an endoscope and is of a living fetus inside the uterus. Pretty amazing.
——————————————–
There’s not a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, there’s an SUV.
————————————————
At first I thought this was two pictures stacked on top of each other, but then I noticed it’s just one picture. What the hell is going on? O.o This ia picture from Australia when The Pasha Buker ran aground in 2007.
————————————–
This is the kind of picture you know there’s a guy in comments who’s gonna say “This is ‘shopped. I can tell form the lighting and the pixels, and having seen quite a few ‘shops in my time”…
But this is Brutus the Bear and the family who is keeping him as a pet. He was raised in captivity, probaby like a normal child with dinners around the table, boring visits to grandma and fighting over who get’s the bathroom first in the morning. Totally normal.
————————————————
These dogs are not some from some freaky torture house or were in a car accident. These dogs live in the Philippines and were born without front legs. Apparently they live almost normal lives and are cared for and loved.
—————————————-
“Someone said my name in vain, you say? I must smite them” – God..
Um yeah.. This is a fire whirl, a momentary phenomenon caused by twisting air currents.
———————————————–
This is Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain, and it is not being slowly eaten by the earth. The people built the town this way, cramming it under the rocks O.o
————————————————-
This looks like seomthing form an alien abduction movie, and not a really good but. But it’s actually from my country, Norway. This happened when the Russians (damn Russians *shakes fist*) failed at a missile test and scared everyone who saw it. I’m ending this post (this very very long post) with some more pics of that event.

I’ve decided to make some more articles on this blog, to make it a bit more personal in between all the random pictures and gifs.
This is a top 9 favourite movies because I couldn’t think if 10, lol.
I’m not going to include any of the LotR and Star Wars movies on this list, they are in a category of their own ^^
I can’t choose which one of these movies I like the most, so I’ll post them in chronological order :)
1. Black Swan (2010)
This brilliant and masterfully made movie got me wanting more after it was over. I saw it yesterday, and I want to see it again today. Natalie Portman did and amazing job in portaying Nina Sayers and how she gets lost in her own mind. This movie is thrilling, scary and beautiful.
—————————————–
2. Inception (2010)

This movie is not for everyone, I’ve heard people call it stupid and unrealistic. But these people don’t get it, this movie is deep (hurr hurr) and you have to be able to see past what you think you’re seeing. Watching it on a huge screen with lots of volume and good seats is how this movie is best experienced.
And it spurred some great meme’s, lol.
————————————–
3. Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows pt1 (2010)

(I think this is the poster for the next part)
As a big Harry Potter fan, this movie is a must on my list. I’d also like to have The Halfblood Prince, The Order of the Phoenix and The Prisoner of Azkaban on this list, but I felt I could only take one HP movie, lol. This is the best one (so far), it’s darker, more emotional and since I loved the book I can’t not like this movie. I’m hoping the next part will be even better.
——————————–
4. Shutter Island (2010)

2010 was a good year for Leonardo DiCaprio, and a good year for his fans. Shutter Island is a much darker and “scarier” movie than Inception, and I think I liked it a bit more too. Leo is very good at portaying very emotionally deep characters, and this movie will have you asking “what?” and “how?” several times. And I love that it’s from 1954, taking place in a time people call “much simpler” but it’s just as screwed up at some parts as our time is.
————————————–
5. Avatar (2009)

Avatar blew me away when I first saw it on a huge movie screen. If I look aside from the fact that the 3D effects make me dizzy and sick, it was visually amazing. I really want to live on Pandora and run around with blue, half naked cat people and speak Na’vi.
Avatar is a mixture of a storye we’ve heard before; the classic “Pocahontas story”, of humanity’s greed and destuction and of great special effetcs, very loveable and hateable characters, and originality still. One of the few movies I saw more than once at the cinema. And I bought The Avatar Six-Disc Extended Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray ^_^
————————————-
6. The Dark Knight 2008

I never was much of a Batman fan, I had always found the movies kinda stupid and comical. But that was before I saw the first Batman remake, “Batman Begins”. Christian Bale was a very good choice to play Batman, and I really liked “Batman Begins”. So when “The Dark Knight” came out, I got excited. And when I saw it I wasn’t let down, I was pleasantly surprised. I had seen Heath Ledger before, and loved him, but seeing him as The Joker gave me a whole new feeling about him. He was simply brilliant, and I could hardly recognize him. And I was so sad when I heard he had died, it’s such a loss.
And Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face was a great choice too, I love how insane he becomes after his accident.
———————————–
7. V for Vendetta (2006)

Another good movie starring Natalie Portman on this list. (Not hard to see on my blog that both Natalie Portman and Leonardo DiCaprio are two of my favourite actors).
This movie shows what power crazy people might end up doing, how they will try to controll their country and how the people suffer until they find the strenght to stand up to it. And I must say Hugo Weaving did a great job portraying different emotions and moods from just a slight move of his mask. That’s not an easy thing to do.
————————————
8. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

This is such a strong movie, and it talks about a subject that has been taboo for years. Not just the two men who fall in love part, but the fact that they are supposed to be though cowboy types. It got knows as the “gay Cowboy Movie” but I feel that’s not very fair.
It’s a very complicated love story, about shame, guilt and hope. To choose the one you want and the possibility of casting shame on yourself and your family. Or going on pretending, only seing the one you love in stolen months in the summer.
Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal did a great job in this movie, they made their character’s emotions seem so real, there was nothing dirty about anyting in this movie. It leaves me in tears everytime I see it.
——————————-
9. The Village (2004)

M. Night Shyamalan has recieved a lot of harsh words for several of his films after The Sixth Sense. Such as Lady in the Water, Signs and The Village. But I like all those movies, so maybe I’m just weird. The Village is a dramatic movie, and like all of M. Night Shyamalan films, things are not as they might seem. This was actually the second movie I saw that he had made, Signs being the first one. And I really liked it. I didn’t know that he always had twist endings, so for me this was a new kind of movie.
And also, this move shows how good of an actor Adrian Brody can be.
